Hiring was surprisingly strong again in the construction and manufacturing sectors in December, with payrolls up by 30,000 and 25,000 respectively. Each of these sectors has added around 200,000 workers over the full year. The health care industry continued to gain the professional and business services sector only rose by 19,000, well shy of the sector’s average pace of around 44,000 jobs per month in 2017. Retail employment was down by 20,000 in December; over the full year, this sector has lost more than 66,000 jobs.
