Hiring activity was strong in the construction industry in February, as employment grew by 61,000, and in manufacturing, where employment was up by 31,000. These two industries have collectively added more than 360,000 jobs over the past six months. Retail hiring was surprisingly healthy in February, up 50,000, with more than a third of the new jobs coming from general merchandise stores. Employment also increased by 50,000 in the professional and business services sector.
