How to Get a Management Job at Your Dream Destination
Do you ever wish you could make a living at your dream destination—but without putting your management career on hold? Well, the good news is that doing just that is becoming increasingly more feasible, thanks to increased globalization, the rise in cross-border projects, and a growing demand for managers with international experience. Keep the following five tips in mind:
1. Look for international assignments with your own employer. KPMG’s 2017 report “Global Assignment Policies and Practices Survey” collected responses from more than 150 cross-industry companies and found that 86 percent offered international assignments of less than 12 months, 97 percent offered assignments of between one and five years, and 61 percent offered assignments of indefinite length (or permanent transfers). So if your employer has operations in a country where you’d like to spend some time, it’s a good idea to ask your supervisor or someone in HR how you can qualify for an international assignment that would keep your career progression within your own company on track.
2. Look for employers that offer rotational or international assignments. If you’re currently in the market for a new job, then you can tailor your job search towards employers that offer rotational assignments and/or international assignments at your dream destination.
3. Work with an international job placement agency. There are several international job placement agencies that specialize in placing talent overseas. Speak to a recruiter about the kind of opportunity you’re looking for, where you’d like to go, and how your specific qualifications could be attractive to employers at that destination. Keep in mind that hiring overseas employees is a significant responsibility for employers, so you need to present yourself as a high-potential candidate who’ll bring unique skills to the organization.
4. Ask your network for references. Review your network for any contacts who live at your dream destination, and ask them if they can introduce you to acquaintances who might be able to help you, as well as to alert you if they hear of a company looking for someone with your skills.
5. Look for management jobs outside of your own industry. If you can’t find a management job in your own industry, there may be managerial jobs in other industries such as tourism, travel, communication, or education. You can also look in the non-profit sector. To qualify for these jobs, it’s best to work with an international recruiter who can help you create a résumé based on your transferable skills and experience.
In today’s global marketplace, it’s becoming easier to spend time overseas while still advancing your management career. Just remember to clearly communicate the unique value you can bring to a company, and you could soon be calling your dream destination home!
